1. RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS FOR ALARMS
• Locatethefirstalarmintheimmediateareaofthebedrooms.
Trytomonitortheexitpathasthebedroomsareusuallyfarthest
from the exit. If more than one sleeping area exists, locate addi-
tional alarms in each sleeping area.
• Locateadditionalalarmstomonitoranystairwayasstairwaysact
like chimneys for smoke and heat.
• Locateatleastonealarmoneveryfloorlevel.
• Locateanalarmineverybedroom.
• Locateanalarmineveryroomwhereelectricalappliancesare
operated(i.e.portableheatersorhumidifiers).
• Locateanalarmineveryroomwheresomeonesleepswiththe
door closed. The closed door may prevent an alarm not located
in that room from waking the sleeper.
• Smoke,heat,andcombustionproductsrisetotheceilingand
spread horizontally. Mounting the smoke alarm on the ceiling in
the center of the room places it closest to all points in the room.
Ceiling mounting is preferred in ordinary residential construction.
• Formobilehomeinstallation,selectlocationscarefullytoavoid
thermalbarriersthatmayformattheceiling.Formoredetails,
seeMOBILEHOMEINSTALLATIONbelow.
• Whenmountinganalarmontheceiling,locateitataminimum
of4”(10cm)fromthesidewall(seefigure1).
• Whenmountingthealarmonthewall,useaninsidewallwith
thetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof4”(10cm)anda
maximumof12”(30.5cm)belowtheceiling(seefigure1).
• Putsmokealarmsatbothendsofabedroomhallwayorlarge
roomifthehallwayorroomismorethan30ft(9.1m)long.
• InstallSmokeAlarmsonsloped,peakedorcathedralceilings
atorwithin3ft(0.9m)ofthehighestpoint(measuredhori-
zontally).NFPA72states:“Smokealarmsinroomswithceiling
slopesgreaterthan1ftin8ft(.3min2.4m)horizontallyshall
belocatedonthehighsideoftheroom.”NFPA72states:“A
rowofalarmsshallbespacedandlocatedwithin3ft(0.9m)of
thepeakoftheceilingmeasuredhorizontally”(seefigure3).
