Safety
Note Package names, bundles, and ordering numbers for different configurations of the UC 540, with selected
interface cards or services, are indicated by changing the last digit of the marketing designation within
the range of 0 to 9. These changed numbers do not affect the model name, and they do not appear on the
bottom homologation label with the approvals. The basic approved chassis of the UC 540 is not changed
or modified in any way.
Safety
This section describes safety conditions and operating conditions for the UC 540. It contains the
following:
• Agency Approvals and Standards
• Restricted Area
• Operating Conditions for Canada
• Operating Conditions for Australia and the European Community
• Operating Conditions for the United Kingdom
Warning
This equipment will be inoperable when mains power fails.
Statement 198
Warning
High leakage current—permanent earth connection essential before making Telecommunication
Network Connection.
Statement 343
Warning
To avoid electric shock, do not connect safety extra-low voltage (SELV) circuits to telephone-network
voltage (TNV) circuits. LAN ports contain SELV circuits, and WAN ports contain TNV circuits. Some
LAN and WAN ports both use RJ-45 connectors. Use caution when connecting cables.
Statement 1021
Warning
Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been
disconnected at the network interface.
Statement 1037
Warning
Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an electrical storm. There may be a remote
risk of electric shock from lightning.
Statement 1038
Warning
For connections outside the building where the equipment is installed, the following ports must be
connected through an approved network termination unit with integral circuit protection.

Safety
Warning
Voltages that present a shock hazard may exist on Power over Ethernet (PoE) circuits if
interconnections are made using uninsulated exposed metal contacts, conductors, or terminals.
Avoid using such interconnection methods, unless the exposed metal parts are located within a
restricted access location and users and service people who are authorized within the restricted
access location are made aware of the hazard. A restricted access area can be accessed only
through the use of a special tool, lock and key or other means of security.
Statement 1072
Warning
No user-serviceable parts inside. Do not open.
Statement 1073
Agency Approvals and Standards
This section lists the following agency approvals and standards for safety:
• CSA Certified to Information Technology Equipment – Safety – Part 1: General Requirements, CSA
CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60950-1-03, and UL 60950-1
• Self-certified compliant to Australian Standard AS/NZS 60950.1:2003
• CSA CB certificate/Test Report to EN and IEC 60950-1 with all country deviations and national
deviations
Restricted Area
The following warning is applicable only in Scandinavian countries.
Warning
This unit is intended for installation in restricted access areas. A restricted access area can be
accessed only through the use of a special tool, lock and key, or other means of security.
Statement 1017
Operating Conditions for Canada
In addition to the warnings and safety guidelines listed in the “Translated Safety Warnings” section on
page 13 in this document, the following operating conditions apply to the UC 540 used in Canada:
• The Canadian Department of Communications label identifies certified equipment. This
certification means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications network protective
operational and safety requirements. The Department does not guarantee that the equipment will
operate to the user’s satisfaction.
• Before installing the equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to connect the equipment
to the facilities of the local telecommunications company. The equipment must also be installed
using an acceptable method of connection. In some cases, the company’s inside wiring associated
with a single-line individual service may be extended by means of a certified connector assembly
(telephone extension cord). The customer should be aware that compliance with the above
conditions may not prevent degradation of service in some situations.
