Windows® Storage Server 2008 R2
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 is an advanced storage
and le serving solution for any size organization that
offers easy manageability and powerful storage features
on a proven and reliable server platform.
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 is built on the
Windows Server® 2008 R2 operating system to
provide a platform for Network Attached Storage
(NAS) appliances. It is optimized to deliver a better
le serving experience. Windows Storage Server-
based products provide advanced storage solutions
for small businesses to large enterprises. Storage
technologies such as le deduplication, and an iSCSI
software target provide unique storage features for
these unied le and block I/O storage appliances.
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 provides simplied
deployment and management of single node
or dual-node, highly-available storage clusters.
Microsoft partners offer specialized hardware and
additional pre-congured software components to
create Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 appliances.
Built on Windows Server 2008 R2 File Services
Taking advantage of the more efcient le services
in Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 positions your
organization to handle data more intelligently
and minimize costs. As your organization grows,
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 scales to meet

data is highly available. With features like failover
clustering and Multipath I/O, you can ensure that
your data storage solution has no single point of
failure and will continue to be available when your

Advanced Storage Technologies
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 adds to
the functionality of Windows Server 2008 R2
le services by providing advanced storage
technologies, including le and iSCSI block storage,
and data deduplication capabilities. These additional
functionalities are designed to be easy to use,
function transparently to users, and require minimal
maintenance.
Simplied Deployment and Management
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 is deployed as an
appliance, which means the hardware and software
are precongured. This dramatically reduces the
deployment effort normally associated with a new
le server. The appliance form factor greatly reduces
the amount of time to deploy a new le server,
removing many management tasks, and minimizing
the deployment impact on the organization’s le
infrastructure. In addition, the Initial Conguration
Tasks user interface allows you to quickly congure
stand-alone appliances or two nodes in a cluster
conguration from a single console.

Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Features
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 provides many user benets, including:
Distributed access to les.
Windows Server 2008 R2 le services enable
administrators to provide faster access to les while
minimizing the effort required to manage distributed
data. Users have fast access to information that can
be managed more easily by IT pros, regardless of
whether the data is stored in a data center or in a
branch ofce.
More efcient and unied storage.
Storage requirements are intelligently monitored,
and duplicate les are located and consolidated,
saving storage space and freeing disk resources.
iSCSI provides an affordable way to deliver block
storage without the costly hardware and extensive
training normally required to deploy such storage
solutions. You can create Storage Area Network
(SAN) gateway solutions that allow you to utilize
existing SAN investments.

iSCSI block I/O.
As a precongured appliance, Windows Storage
Server 2008 R2 is ready to go right out of the box.
File services are precongured and deployment is
quick and painless — often “in 30 minutes or less.”
iSCSI block I/O is perfect for Hyper-V™ deployments
and enables Live Migration for virtualized
environments.
Deployment solutions optimized for branch
ofces.
Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 is highly-
optimized for small footprint, remote sites that
require local le services and iSCSI block I/O, but
have minimum management resources. Appliances
can be remotely managed and operate in a
headless conguration. In addition, WAN utilitization
is dramatically reduced between the head ofce and
branch ofces using the SMB 2.1 protocol and the
BranchCache feature.

standard hardware, so you can scale up and scale
out your solutions with minimal costs. Failover
clustering allows you to create highly available
solutions that are easy to deploy and operate to
