1 General Information
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II
The rst generation -Board Diagnostics (called OBD was of On I)
de op ple d vel ed by the li rn Air Resources Board (ARB) and imCa fo ia mente
in 1988 to monitor some of the emission control mponents on vehicles. co
As chnolo olv and the desire to impr e e -Board Diagnostic te gy ev ed ov th On
system increased, a w generation of On-Board Diagnostic sy em s ne st wa
developed. This second generation of On-Board Diagnostic regulations is
called “OBD II”.
The OBD system designed to monitor emission ntrol systems and II is co
key engi components by perform either ntinuous or periodic tests ne ing co of
specic c ponent and ve cle conditions. Wh a problem detected, om s hi en is

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
