Instructions for Use
IMPORTANT : Read completely before using the charger.
WARNING!
Batteries emit EXPLOSIVE GASES - prevent flame or sparks near batteries and do not smoke.
Protect the charger from dirt and damp. Battery acid is highly corrosive. Wear eye protection and protective
clothing when handling batteries. Distance batteries being charged as far as reasonably possible from the
charger to minimise the highly corrosive effects of acidic battery fumes and fluids. Ventilate the area well.
Do not balance the charger on a vehicle or other irregular surface, place it firmly on a hard flat surface (but
not on textile, plastic or leather) or use the kit provided to fix the charger to a wall,
(details on page 8)
.
Do not place batteries or any other object on top of the charger. Do not use the charger unless all cables
and connection components are in good condition.
CONNECTIONS : This charger is delivered with five sets of detachable battery connection sets with alli-
gator clips. A number of optional connection accessories are available including an 8 ft 16Awg output exten-
sion lead set. Batteries to be charged should be removed from the vehicle or wiring circuit and placed with
the charger in a well ventilated area. Prevent entry of dirt or damp into the two-pole connectors.
IMPORTANT : It is essential to ensure a good contact between the charger and the battery posts. When you
attach the battery clips to the battery posts wiggle them slightly to ensure a firm and secure contact. Check
that the battery clips are well apart & not in contact with each other or those of neighbouring stations. Always
connect the charger to the batteries to be charged before making the connection to the wall socket (AC
power). Disconnect in reverse order.
FUSES : Each input by a fuse. Should one of these 5 fuses blow, replace it only with an identical type of 2A
250V MT.
The following details apply to each of the 5 charging stations individually.
LED indications
CHARGING
When correct connections are made and the input power is live, the RED Power On LED should light together
with the YELLOW LED if the battery needs some charging. If the battery is completely sulfated (but never-
theless still measures > 2V), or already fully charged the
GREEN LED
may light immediately. If the RED
“wrong connections” LED lights, disconnect from the wall socket, correct the connections at the battery,
then reconnect at the wall socket. The charger is electronically protected against wrong battery connec-
tions and no damage will result.
The YELLOW LED indicates that either the constant current, bulk charging stage (which ends when the
battery voltage has risen to 14,3V) or the subsequent absorption stage (at a constant voltage of 14,3V), is

engaged. When in the absorption stage the current entering the battery has reduced to about 0,5 Amps,
which means the battery is very close to full charge, the YELLOW LED gives way to the
GREEN LED
to indi-
cate that the battery is charged and ready for use. The circuit automatically now limits the voltage at 13,5V
in the maintenance mode (float voltage support). The battery can be left connected without risk for medium
to long term maintenance until required. However the temperature of the area in which a battery is to be
kept for more than a few weeks should not exceed 25°C or 77°F. Check the electrolite level of batteries
with filler caps at least every 2 weeks. The circuit will revert to charge mode (YELLOW LED) if the battery
is not holding its charge well, or, if the battery remains connected in a wiring system, if there are losses of
current in the wiring due to small electronic loads or worn insulation or contacts.
If this happens it means that the battery requires more power to keep it charged than is available in the
maintenance mode (
GREEN LED
). To determine whether the defect lies in the battery or in the wiring sys-
tem, if still connected to the battery, disconnect the battery from the wiring system and reconnect it to the
charger to observe later whether the
GREEN LED
is able to indicate consistently when the wiring system
load is removed.
The following LED indications imply problems, or that the battery is faulty and probably needs replacing.
On the other hand, if after studying the following information you think something is wrong with the charger
circuit, DO NOT tamper with the charger, get it checked by a TecMate authorised agent :
a) Only the Power ON RED LED lights & the connections are OK: the battery is probably too deep-discharged
(below 2V) to accept a charge.
b) The
GREEN LED
indicates, but the battery is found to have no power : the battery is not accepting the
charge and is probably sulfated.
c) The YELLOW &
GREEN LEDs
flicker on alternatively : the battery is not able to hold the charge and may
be sulfated or permanently damaged. In the case that the battery is still connected to a wiring system, dis-
connect it and charge it again.
d) The YELLOW LED indicates for days & the
GREEN LED
never comes on : there is a loss of current due
to an internal short current through that wiring system, in which case disconnect the battery from the
wiring system and charge it again.
NOTE: The time normally required to charge a battery to the stage where the
GREEN LED
indicates is
dependent on the size & degree of discharge of the battery. A large battery (66 to 80Ah) as used in a large
car, sports utility, delivery van or boat will take much longer to charge than that of a motorcycle (9 to 30Ah).
Severely discharged batteries will take much longer than moderately discharged batteries. Except for sul-
fated batteries, the
GREEN LED
should light after not much more than the number of hours equal to about
half of the battery’s rated capacity in Ampere-hours (Ah). E.g., for a 20 Ah rated battery, the
GREEN LED
should light within not more than 10 – 12 hours.
