for use in manufactured (mobile) homes! Please check

The purpose of this manual is twofold: one, to provide the installer with
the basic directions and recommendations for the proper installation
and adjustment of the water heater; and two, to the owner-operator,
to explain the features, operation, safety precautions, maintenance and
troubleshooting of the water heater. This manual also includes a parts
list.

PROPERLY INSTALL WATER HEATER
Failure to properly install the water heater outdoors as outlined in the Installation
Instructions in this manual can result in unsafe operation of the water heater. To
avoid the risk of ๎ƒ€re, explosion, or asphyxiation from carbon monoxide, never
operate this water heater unless it is installed properly and has an adequate
air supply for proper operation. Be sure to inspect the ๎ƒue terminal for proper
installation at initial start-up; and at least annually thereafter. Refer to the Care
and Cleaning section of this manual for more information regarding ๎ƒue terminal
inspection.
WARNING!
Gasoline, as well as other ๎ƒammable materials and liquids (adhesives, solvents,
paint thinners etc.), and the vapors they produce are extremely dangerous. DO
NOT handle, use or store gasoline or other ๎ƒammable or combustible materials
anywhere near or in the vicinity of a water heater or any other appliance. Be sure
to read and follow the labels on the water heater, as well as the warnings printed
in this manual. Failure to do so can result in property damage, bodily injury or

Installation:
Do not Install water heater where ๎ƒammable products will be stored or used
unless the main burner ๎ƒame Is at least 18โ€ above the ๎ƒoor. This will reduce, but
not eliminate, the risk of vapors being ignited by the main burner ๎ƒame.

WATER TEMPERATURE SETTING
Safety and energy conservation are factors to be considered when selecting the
water temperature setting. Water temperatures above 125ยฐF can cause severe
burns or death from scalding. The thermostat is adjusted to its lowest temperature
position when shipped from the factory. Be sure to read and follow the warnings
outlined on the label pictured below.
The chart shown above may be used as a guide
in determining the proper water temperature for
your home
DANGER: Households with small children,
disabled, or elderly persons may require a 120ยฐF.
or lower temperature setting to prevent contact
withโ€HOTโ€ water.
Maximum water temperature occurs while
burner is on. To ๎ƒ€nd water temperature being
delivered, turn on a hot water faucet and place
a thermometer in the water stream and read the
thermometer.
The temperature of the water at the outlet of
the water heater can be regulated by setting the
temperature on the front display. The default
temperature was set at 110ยฐF before it was
shipped from the factory.
The illustration to the bottom left illustrates
the display panel and how to adjust the water
temperature.
NOTICE: When this water heater is supplying
general purpose hot water requirements for
use by individuals, a thermostatically controlled
mixing valve for reducing point of use water
temperature is recommended to reduce the risk
of scald injury. Contact a licensed plumber or the
local plumbing
authority for further information.

DANGER!
NATURAL GAS AND LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM MODELS
Both LP and natural gas have an odorant added to aid in detecting a gas leak.
Some people may not physically be able to smell or recognize this odorant. If you
are unsure or unfamiliar with the smell of LP or natural gas, ask the gas supplier.
Other conditions, such as โ€œodorant fadeโ€, which causes the odorant to diminish in
intensity, can also hide or camou๎ƒage a gas leak. Always check with commercial
leak detector or soapy water.
โ€ข Gas detectors are recommended in LP and natural gas applications and
their installation should be in accordance with the detector manufacturerโ€™s
recommendations and/or local laws, rules, regulations or customs.
โ€ข Water heaters utilizing LP gas are di๎ถปerent from natural gas models. A natural
gas water heater will not function safely on LP gas and vice versa.
โ€ข No attempt should ever be made to convert the water heater from natural gas
to LP gas. To avoid possible equipment damage, personal injury or ๎ƒ€re, do not
connect the water heater to a fuel type not in accordance with the unit data
plate; propane for propane units and natural gas for natural gas units. These
units are not certi๎ƒ€ed for any other fuel type.
โ€ข LP water heaters should not be installedยท below grade (for example, in a
basement) if such installation is prohibited by federal, state and/or local laws,
rules, regulations or customs.
โ€ข Propane or LP gas must be used with great caution. It is heavier than air and
will collect ๎ƒ€rst in lower areas making it hard to detect at nose level.
โ€ข Before attempting to light the water heater, make sure to look and smell for
gas leaks. Use a soapy solution to check all gas ๎ƒ€ttings and connections.
Bubbling at a connection indicates a leak that must be corrected. When smelling
to detect a gas leak, be sure to sni๎ถป near the ๎ƒoor also.
โ€ข It is recommended that more than one method, such as soapy solution, gas
detectors, etc., be used to detect leaks in gas applications.
Notice: If a gas leak is present or suspected:
โ€ข DO NOT attempt to ๎ƒ€nd the cause yourself.
โ€ข DO NOT try to light any appliances.
โ€ข DO NOT touch any electrical switch.
โ€ข DO NOT use any phone in your building.
โ€ข Leave the house immediately and make sure your family and pets leave
also.
โ€ข Leave the doors open for ventilation and contact the gas supplier, a
quali๎ƒ€ed service agency or the ๎ƒ€re department.
โ€ข Stay away from the house (or building) until the service call has been
made, the leak is corrected and a quali๎ƒ€ed agency has determined the
area to be safe.

strapped to resist falling or horizontal displacement due to earthquake motions.
For residential water heaters up to 52 gallon capacity, a brochure with generic
earthquake bracing instructions can be obtained from: O๎ถผce of the State Architect,
400 P Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 or you may call 916-445-8100 or ask a water
heater dealer.
However, applicable local codes shall govern installation. For residential water
heaters of a capacity greater than 52 gallons or tankless style, consult the local
building jurisdiction code for acceptable bracing procedures.

Have the installer show you the location of the gas shut-o๎ถป valve and how to shut
it o๎ถป if necessary. Turn o๎ถป the manual shut-o๎ถป valve if the water heater has been
subjected to overheating, ๎ƒ€re, ๎ƒood, physical damage or if the gas supply fails to

The water heater must be located so it is not
subject to physical damage, for example, by
moving vehicles, area ๎ƒooding, etc.
The water heater must be installed vertically
with the water, gas, and power connections
on the underside, pointing toward the
ground.
Failure to properly install the water heater
outdoors as outlined in this manual can result
in unsafe operation.
Hot and cold water lines should be insulated
to conserve water and energy.
DO NOT install water heater where subject to
vibrations.
DO NOT install the water heater in
Recreational Vehicles, Mobile Homes, Boats
and other Watercraft.
DO NOT install the water heater near vents
for heating or cooling. A minimum of 4 feet
should be maintained.
If the clearances stated on the Instruction/
Warning Label, located on the front panel
of the heater di๎ถปer, install the water heater
according to the clearances stated on the label.
Location
This water heater is for OUTDOOR
installation ONLY!
Make sure before installation that the gas
type you will use is the same type on the
data plate.
The water heater unit should be installed
by professionals from your local gas
company. Please donโ€™t attempt installation
by yourself. Improper installation may
cause failure or dangerous conditions such
as gas leaking or explosion.
This water heater is an outdoor model and
must be mounted on a vertical wall. It must
not be installed indoors or in a con๎ƒ€ned
space. The water heater should be installed
close to the most frequently used outlet
and its position chosen with safety and
service in mind.
Make sure people (particularly children,
disabled, and elderly) will not touch the
hot water outlet or the ๎ƒue terminal. The
๎ƒue terminal and air inlet must be clear of
obstruction and shrubbery.
If installed in a public corridor, please assure
that the surrounding area is free of debris,
obstruction and ๎ƒammable materials.
The unit must be installed on a ๎ƒ€re retardant
area, and must be away from all ๎ƒammable
materials. Clearance should be 1.75 ft to the
left and right side of ๎ƒammable materials,
and 6.75 ft to the front.
The unit should be installed in open area
where strong currents are not prevalent
This unit is of high power and will consume a
lot of oxygen when working, so the installation
area must be well ventilated, and air in and
out of the area has no blockage.
The outdoor unit should not be installed in a
corridor with rooms on the both sides or in
the closed corridor.
Take measures to avoid direct wind, rain
and snow. The installation area should be
constructed of ๎ƒ€re retardant materials. The
power socket connecting the water heater
should be properly grounded.

Proper operation of the water heater requires air for combustion and ventilation. Provisions
for combustion and ventilation air must comply with referenced codes and standards.
Combustion and Ventilation Air
This water heater is for OUTDOOR installation ONLY.
It must NOT be installed indoors or in a con๎ƒ€ned space.
Installing the EL22 water heater
Corrosive Atmospheres
The air in beauty shops, dry cleaning establishments, photo
processing labs, and storage areas for liquid and powdered
bleaches or swimming pool chemicals often contain such
halogenated hydrocarbons.
An air supply containing halogenated hydrocarbons may be safe
to breathe, but when it passes through a gas ๎ƒame corrosive
elements are released that will shorten the life of any gas
burning appliance.
Propellants from common spray cans or gas leaks from A/ C and
refrigeration equipment are highly corrosive after passing through
a ๎ƒame.
The water heater warranty is voided when failure of the heater is
due to operation in a corrosive atmosphere.
NOTICE: The water heater
should not be installed near
an air supply containing
halogenated hydrocarbons.
Inspect Shipment
Inspect the water heater for possible damage. Check the markings on the rating plate of the water
heater to be certain the type of gas supplied corresponds to the water heater requirements. Verify
all included parts are present (see below).

Water Supply Connections Continued
If a water heater is installed in a closed water supply system, such as
one having a back๎ƒow preventer in the cold water supply line, means
shall be provided to control thermal expansion. Contact the water
supplier or local plumbing inspector on how to control this situation.
Install a shuto๎ท‡ valve near the inlet of the water heater for service and
draining purposes.
Before connecting the water supply pipe to the water heater, open
the shuto๎ถป valve ยทand clean out sand, debris, air, caulking material,
etc. inside the pipe. Connect to the water inlet, then check water ๎ƒow.
Close the shuto๎ถป valve and clean the water ๎ƒ€lter.
Be sure to connect the water inlet and the hot water outlet as shown
on the water heater. If reversed, the water heater will not function.
Installation of unions or ๎ƒexible copper connections are
recommended on the HOT and COLD water lines, so that the water
heater may disconnect easily for servicing if necessary.
Install a Check Valve between the water heater and the water shuto๎ถป
valve. (See illustration to the top left).
In regards to the HOT WATER OUTLET:
Connections between the water heater and point(s) of use should be
as short and direct as possible.
DO NOT use lead or non-approved plastic pipe.
NOTICE: The ๎ƒow rate of hot water may vary when more than two
faucets (appliances, ๎ƒ€xtures, etc.) are being used simultaneously.
NOTICE: The pipes MUST be completely drainable. If the hot water faucets are located at a point higher
than the water heater, place a drain valve at the lowest point (see illustration to the bottom left).
Gas Supply
WARNING: Do not attempt to convert this water heater for use with a di๎ท‡erent type of
gas other than the type shown on the rating plate. Such conversion could result in hazardous
operating conditions. Please have a professional connect the gas pipe.
A Manual Gas Appliance Shuto๎ถป
Valve must be installed at the gas
connection of the water heater at the
time of installation (see diagram to
the left). The branch gas supply line to
the water heater should be clean black
steel pipe or other approved gas piping
material.
A ground joint union or ANSI design
certi๎ƒ€ed semi-rigid or ๎ƒexible gas
appliance connector should be
installed in the gas line close to the
water heater. The National Fuel Gas
Code (NFGC) mandates a manual gas
shut-o๎ถป valve: See (NFGC) for complete
instructions.
If ๎ƒexible connectors are used, the
maximum length shall not exceed 36โ€.
If lever type gas shut o๎ถปs are used, they
shall be T-Handle type.
Compound used on the threaded
joints of the gas piping must be of
the type resistant to the action of LP
gas. Use compound sparingly on male
threads only.
A sediment trap should be installed
at the bottom of the gas line.
Do not use excessive force (over
31.5 ft lbs.) in tightening the pipe,
particularly if pipe-tape compound
is used, as the unit may be damaged.
The inlet gas pressure to the water
heater must not exceed 10.5 โ€œ w.c.
for natural or 14โ€ w.c. for LP gas. For
purposes of input adjustment, the
minimum inlet gas pressure (with
main burner on) is shown on the
water heater rating plate. If high or
low gas pressures are present, contact
your gas supplier for correction.

Relief Valve
โ€ข The pressure rating of the relief valve must not exceed
150 psi, the maximum working pressure of the water
heater as marked on the rating plate.
โ€ข The BTUH rating of the relief valve must equal or exceed
the BTUH input of the water heater as marked on its
rating plate.
โ€ข No valve of any type should be installed between the
relief valve and the water heater.
โ€ข Discharge from the relief valve should be piped to a
suitable drain to eliminate potential water damage. Piping
used should be of a type approved for the distribution of
hot water.
โ€ข Hot and cold water lines should be insulated up to the
water heater.
โ€ข The discharge line must be NO SMALLER than the outlet
of the valve and must pitch downward to allow complete
drainage (by gravity) of the relief valve and discharge line.
โ€ข The end of the discharge line should not be threaded or
concealed and should be protected from freezing. No
valve of any type, restriction or reducer coupling should
be installed in discharge line.
NOTICE: Local codes govern the installation of relief valves. If local codes require that a temperature
and pressure relief valve should be installed the manufacturer recommends a type 40XL Watts T&P
relief valve or an equivalent model be used.
NOTICE: Manual operation of relief valves should be performed at least once a year. Turn o๎ถป the
electrical power and gas shuto๎ถป valve. Lift and release lever on the relief valve and check the manual
operation of the relief valve. You should take precaution to avoid contact with the hot water coming
out of the relief valve and to prevent water damage.
NOTICE: If the relief valve on the system discharges periodically, this may be due to thermal expansion
in a closed water supply system. Contact the water supplier or local plumbing inspector on how to
correct theis situation. Do not plug the relief valve.
A new pressure relief valve, complying with the Standard for relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shut-O๎ท‡
Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22, must be installed at the hot water outlet connection of
the water heater at the time of installation. Local codes shall govern the installation of relief valves.
For safe operation of the water heater, be sure that:

Pressure Testing the Gas Supply System
WARNING: Install a gas pressure regulator, in the gas supply line, which does not exceed the
maximum supply pressure.
DO NOT use an industrial type gas regulator.
Failure to isolate heater during pressure test can damage internal components voiding warranty. The water heater
and its individual shuto๎ถป valve must be disconnected from the gas supply piping system during any pressure
testing of that system at testy pressures in excess of 1/2 psi. The water heater must be isolated from the gas
piping system by closing the manual gas shut-o๎ถป valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping at test
pressures equal to or less than 1/2 psi (14โ€™w.c.).

WARNING : Moisture in the ๎ƒue
gas will condense as it leaves the vent
terminal. In cold weather this condensate
can freeze on the exterior wall, under
the eaves and on surrounding objects.
Some discoloration to the exterior of
the building is to be expected. However,
improper location or installation can
result in severe damage to the structure
or exterior ๎ƒ€nish of the building. Code
requirements are subject to change and
may vary by location.
Leak Testing
WARNING: Never use an open ๎ƒame to test for gas leaks, as property damage, personal
injury, or death could result.
The water heater and its gas connections must be leak tested at normal operating pressures before
it is placed in operation.
โ€ข Turn on the gas shut-o๎ถป valve(s) to the water heater.
โ€ข Use a commercial leak detector or soapy water solution to test for leaks at all connections and ๎ƒ€ttings.
Bubbles indicate a gas leak that must be corrected.
The factory connections should also be leak tested after the water heater is placed in operation.
High Altitude
Ratings of gas water heaters are based on sea level operation and need not be changed for installations at
elevations up to 2,000 feet.
Unit not recommended for elevations in excess of 2,000 feet
Installing the water heater.
Flue Terminal Location
The location of the vent terminal depends on the following minimum clearances and considerations
(see illustration):
โ€ข Twelve (12) inches above grade level and above normal snow levels.
โ€ข Four (4) feet below, or four (4) feet horizontally from any door,
window, so๎ถผt, under eave vent or gravity air inlet to the building
or other appliances, or from gas or electric meters. Do not locate
vent above walkways, doors, windows, air inlets, gas or electric
meters or other equipment.
โ€ข Ten (10) feet from any forced air inlet to the building. Any fresh or
make-up air inlet such as for a dryer or furnace area
is considered to be a forced air inlet.
โ€ข Eighteen (18) inches from an inside corner formed by two exterior walls.
โ€ข DO NOT install vent terminal under any patio/deck or too close
to shrubbery, as ๎ƒue gases or condensate vapor may become a
nuisance or hazard and may cause property damage. Condensate
vapor could cause damage and be detrimental to the operation of
regulators, relief valves, or other equipment.
โ€ข To help prevent moisture from freezing on walls and under eaves,
do not locate vent terminal on the side of a building
with prevailing winter winds. The water heater must be located as
close as practicable to a chimney or gas vent.
โ€ข Caulk all cracks, seams and joints within six (6) feet of vent terminal.
โ€ข All painted surfaces should be primed to lessen the chance of
physical damage. Painted surfaces will require maintenance.
โ€ข Use of cellular core PVC (ASTM F891), cellular core CPVC, or
Radel (polyphenylsulfone) in non-metallic venting systems is
prohibited. Covering non-metallic vent pipe and ๎ƒ€ttings with
thermal insulation is prohibited.
โ€ข DO NOT connect to a chimney ๎ƒue serving a separate appliance
designed to burn solid fuel.

The following are considerations for determining the location of the remote control(s):

convenient locations such as the kitchen,

a convenient location in a bathroom, however,

Remote control - Connection, Installation and Set
(For Panel Control/Remote Control and Remote Control units)
Panel Control/Remote Control and Remote Control units will work with either one or two
remote controls. If two remotes are desired, a wire connector will need to be provided. To
connect the remote control:
1. For one control: Plug the aviation joint into the socket directly on the water heater
(see illustration below)
2. For two controls: First, cut o๎ถป the aviation joints on the two controllers, plug one into the
socket on the water heater (length is dependent on your requirements), and throw away the
other. Then connect the wires of the aviation joint to the inlet wire of the connector, and
connect the two remote control to the outlet wires of connector.

Installation of Remote Control

1. Remove the front cover of the Remote Control. (See illustration below)
2. At installation site, mark and screw two holes with 0.24โ€ with 1.2โ€ depth. Insert 2 rubber screws
into the holes. Place the remote control against the wall, align the holes of control with the
holes in the wall, and fasten them with wood thread screws. (See illustration below)
3. Replace the front cover on the remote control.

HARDWIRING THE ELE CTRICAL
CONNECTIONS:
โ€ข Wiring should be carried out by a quali๎ƒ€ed
electrician in accordance with local codes.
โ€ข The water heater requires 120 VAC/60Hz
and should be properly grounded.
โ€ข DO NOT connect grounding wire to water
pipes, gas pipes, telephone cables,
lightning conductor circuits and to
grounding circuit of other equipment that
carry a ground-fault interrupter.
โ€ข An ON/OFF switch must be provided and
installed for the incoming 120VAC power.
โ€ข Wire the water heater exactly as shown
below. A wiring diagram is also found
inside
of the cover panel.
โ€ข A green screw is provided in the junction
box for grounding connection.
โ€ข Connect the live wire to black leg wire and
the neutral wire to the white neutral wire.
Electrical Connection
POWER CORD:
โ€ข The electric power supply requirement for
this water heater is 120 VAC/60HZ, 2 Amps.
โ€ข The water heater comes with a three (3) pin
power supply cord. Use only a power outlet
with a ground terminal.
โ€ข The installation of an electric leakage
breaker is recommended. (GFCI)
โ€ข Keep any excess of the power supply cord
on the outside of the water heater.
โ€ข If local codes require hardwiring, see
instructions for โ€œHardwiring the Electrical
Connectionsโ€.

Insulation blankets, available to the
general public, for external use on
gas water heaters are not
necessary. The purpose of an
insulation blanket is to reduce the
standby heat loss encountered with
storage tank heaters. This water
heater does not store water making
an insulation blanket unnecessary.
The manufacturerโ€™s warranty does
not cover any damage or defect
caused by installation, attachment
or use of any type of energy saving
or other unapproved devices
(other than those authorized by
the manufacturer) into, onto or in
conjunction with the water heater.
The use of unauthorized energy
saving devices may shorten the
life of the water heater and may
endanger life and property.
The manufacturer disclaims any
responsibility for such loss or injury
resulting from the use of such
unauthorized devices.

use pipe insulation. Please install
the insulation, according to the
illustrations above, making sure to
insulate all the way to the top. Do not
cover any drain or pressure valve(s).
Pipe Installation

Use pressure resistant pipe to connect the inlet and outlet
water pipes of the water heater and the local water pipe
(Make sure to place the rubber ring).Before connecting the
inlet water pipe, ๎ƒush the inside of the pipe.

โ€ข To supply hot water to upper ๎ƒoors,
additional water pressure (0.44 psi/ft)
must be ensured.The measurement should
be calculated by the distance between the
water inlet of the water heater (ground
level) to the hot water faucet (upper ๎ƒoor level).
โ€ข Well water systems should be set at a
range of 50-60 psi.
โ€ข When the water is supplied from a water
supply tank, the height of the tank and the
diameter of the pipes and their relation to
water pressure, should be taken into
consideration. Gravity water pressure is
not recommended.
NOTICE: If the water ๎ƒow resistance of a shower
head is too high, the burner in the water heater
will fail to ignite. Keep the shower head clean from
debris that could cause additional pressure drop.
NOTICE: If using mixing valves on the outlet,
choose one which prevents cold water pressure
from overcoming hot water line pressure.
IMPORTANT: Do not apply heat to the HOT or
COLD water connections. Any heat applied to the
water supply ๎ƒ€ttings will permanently damage the
internal components of the water heater.
Water Supply Connections
Plumbing should be carried out by a quali๎ƒ€ed
plumber in accordance with local codes.
Use approved plumbing materials and tools only.
To conserve energy and to prevent freezing,
insulate both cold and hot water supply lines. DO
NOT cover the drain valves.
To ensure proper operation of the water heater,
the following water pressure guidelines should be
followed:
โ€ข Operation of the water heater requires the
minimum water pressure of 14 psi and a
minimum water ๎ƒow rate of 0.75 gpm.
โ€ข Additional water pressure is required for
long pipe runs and outlet ๎ƒ€tting(s) water
pressure drops.
โ€ข To maintain proper performance, ensure
su๎ถผcient water supply pressure. The

Water Pressure (14 psi) + Pipe Pressure
Loss + Faucet and Shower Pressure Loss +
Safety Margin (more than 5 psi).
Mounting the EL22 Water Heater
Make sure the location of the water heater allows for easy access
and operation. The water heater should be located in an area where leakage of the
tank or connections will not result in damage to the area adjacent to the water heater
or to lower ๎ƒoors of the structure. When such locations cannot be avoided, it is
recommended that a suitable drain pan, adequately drained, be installed under the
appliance. The pan must not restrict combustion air ๎ƒow.
In case of dry wall or concrete wall use dry wall anchors or lag bolts.
The water heater requires 120VAC/ 60Hz. Have a receptacle with
ground terminal near the water heater. The length of the power
supply cord is 5 feet.
Drill the holes as per the sizes in the ๎ƒ€gure to the left, put 2 expansion screws into the
top holes, and 2 rubber screws into the bottom holes.
Hang up the water heater unit, tighten the expansion screws, and put 2 wood thread
screws into the bottom holes.
When being installed directly on carpeting, the water heater shall be installed on a
metal or wood panel extending beyond the full width and depth of the water heater
by at least 3 in (76.2 mm) in any direction or, if the water heater is installed in an
alcove or closet, the entire ๎ƒoor shall be covered by the panel. The panel must be
strong enough to carry the weight of the heater when full of water.
CAUTION: Reinforcement of the wall is required in case the wall is not strong enough to hold the water heater.
CAUTION: This water heater must only be used with the following water supply system conditions:
โ€ข With clean, potable water free of corrosive chemicals, sand, dirt, or other contaminates.
โ€ข With inlet water temperatures above 32ยฐF, but not exceeding 120ยฐF.
โ€ข Free of lime and scale deposits.
โ€ข DO NOT reverse the hot and cold water connections. The water heater will not operate.

Indoor Location
โ€ข Installation distances may vary by local code. It is the installerโ€™s responsibility to verify
installation requirements.
โ€ข Make sure before installation that the gas type you will use is the same type on the data
plate.
โ€ข The water heater unit should be installed by professionals. Improper installation may
cause failure or dangerous conditions such as gas leaking or explosion.
โ€ข Water Heater cannot be installed in an UN-VENTED bathroom, bedroom, basement, living
room, closet, outdoor, stairway or an exit area. If installed in an exit area, it must be at
least 16.5 ft. or more away from the exit.
โ€ข Vent pipe should extend from the wall at least 2โ€. The terminal must be at least 1.64 ft.
away from obstruction, and must be well vented.
โ€ข Vent pipe should slope 3ยฐ downward, to avoid condensing water and protect from rain
entering.
โ€ข Vent pipe should avoid direct, strong wind because the downdraft will cause malfunction.
โ€ข The water heater should be installed far from any blockage, and with plenty of enough
space for installation and maintenance. Adequate clearances for servicing must be
provided.
โ€ข The water heater should not be installed in the same room with a gas stove .
โ€ข When determining the ๎ƒoor clearance, a clearance of 6 inches must be maintained
between the vent pipe and combustible material. A side wall clearance of 6 inches and a
top clearance of 12 inches must be maintained.
โ€ข The vent pipe can be up to 32 ft. in length with one elbow.
โ€ข The vent pipe should be installed with a ๎ƒame retardant wall thimble. Owner must refer to
vent manufacturerโ€™s instructions and speci๎ƒ€cations. Z-Flex information can be found at
www.nova๎ƒex.com, please refer to page 19 for additional links. Installation guidelines for
venting provided by NovaFlex, who is solely responsible for venting installation accuracy.
โ€ข The power socket connecting the water heater should be grounded properly with a GFCI
circuit protector.
โ€ข The water heater should not be located in an area where leakage of the heat exchanger
or connections will result in damage to the area adjacent to it or to lower ๎ƒoors of the
structure.When such areas cannot be avoided it is recommended that a suitable catch
pan, adequately drained, must be installed under the water heater. The pan must not
restrict combustion air๎ƒow.
โ€ข The water heater should be installed as close as practical to the vent termination to
minimize vent length and the number of elbows required for venting.
โ€ข A gas ๎ƒ€red water heater or any other appliance should not be installed in a space where
liquids which give o๎ท‡ ๎ƒammable vapors are to be used or stored. Such liquids include
gasoline, LP gas (butane or propane), paint or adhesives and their thinners, solvents or
removers.
โ€ข The water heater should be installed far from heat sources, ๎ƒammable and dangerous
materials. Because of natural air movement in a room or other enclosed space, ๎ƒammable
vapors can be carried some distance from where their liquids are being used or stored. The
open ๎ƒame of the water heaterโ€™s main burner can ignite these vapors causing an explosion
or ๎ƒ€re which may result in severe burns, death or property damage.

โ€ข Raising the water heater will reduce, BUT NOT eliminate the possibility of lighting the
vapor of any ๎ƒammable liquids which may be improperly stored or accidentally spilled .
โ€ข If the water heater is installed in a garage, it should be installed so that the direct ignition
system and main burner are no less than 18 inches above the garage ๎ƒoor.
โ€ข Hot and cold water lines should be insulated to conserve water and energy.
โ€ข The water heater must be located so it is not subject to physical damage, for example, by
moving vehicles, area ๎ƒooding, etc.
โ€ข The water heater should be installed with the proper venting materials and termination
suitable for Category III venting. Failure to install and properly vent the water heater to the
outdoors as outlined in the Venting Section of this manual can result in unsafe operation.

Proper operation of the water heater requires air for combustion and ventilation. Provisions
for combustion and ventilation air must comply with referenced codes and standards.
Combustion and Ventilation Air
Installing the EL22-I water heater continued....
A con๎ƒ€ned space is one having a volume of less than 50 cubic feet per
1,000 BTUH of the aggregate input of all appliances within that space.
The air must be supplied through two permanent openings of equal area. One is
to be located within 12โ€ above the ๎ƒoor and the other is to be located within 12โ€
below the ceiling.
The minimum net free area of each opening must not be less than one
square inch per 1,000 BTUH of the total input rating of all the appliances in the
enclosure (but not less than 100 square inches), if each opening communicates
with other uncon๎ƒ€ned areas inside the building.
Buildings of unusually tight construction shall have the combustion and
ventilation air supplied from outdoors, or a freely ventilated attic or crawl space.
If air is supplied from outdoors, directly or through vertical ducts, there must be
two openings located as speci๎ƒ€ed above and each must have a minimum net free
area of not less than one square inch per 4,000
BTUH of the total input rating of all the appliances in the enclosure.
If horizontal ducts are used to communicate with the outdoors, each opening must have a minimum net
free area of not less than one square inch per 2,000 BTUH of the total input rating of all the appliances in the
enclosure. If ducts are used, the minimum dimensions of rectangular air ducts shall not be less than 4โ€
Inspect Shipment
Inspect the water heater for possible damage. Check the markings on the rating plate of the water
heater to be certain the type of gas supplied corresponds to the water heater requirements. Verify
all included parts are present (see below).
NOTICE: If the water heater is installed in an uncon๎ƒ€ned space within a building of
conventional frame, masonry or metal construction, in๎ƒ€ltration air is normally adequate
for proper combustion and ventilation. If the water heater is installed in a con๎ƒ€ned space,
provisions for combustion and ventilation air must be made.
NOTICE: If the duct openings which supply combustion and ventilation air are to be covered
with a protective screen or grill, the net free area (openings in the material) of the covering
material must be used in determining the size of the openings. Protective screening for the
openings MUST NOT be smaller than 1/4โ€ esh to prevent clogging by lint or other debris. .
Corrosive Atmospheres
The air in beauty shops, dry cleaning
establishments, photo processing labs, and
storage areas for liquid and powdered bleaches
or swimming pool chemicals often contain such
halogenated hydrocarbons.
An air supply containing halogenated
hydrocarbons may be safe to breathe, but when
it passes through a gas ๎ƒame corrosive elements
are released that will shorten the life of any gas
burning appliance.
Propellants from common spray cans or gas
leaks from A/ C and refrigeration equipment are
highly corrosive after passing through a ๎ƒame.
The water heater warranty is voided when failure
of the heater is due to operation in a corrosive
atmosphere.
NOTICE: The water heater should not be
installed near an any air supply containing
halogenated hydrocarbons.

Water Supply Connections....
To conserve energy and to prevent freezing, insulate both cold
and hot water supply lines. DO NOT cover the drain valves.
Install a shuto๎ถป valve near the inlet of the water heater for service
and draining purposes. Before connecting the water supply pipe to
the water heater, open the shuto๎ถป valve ยทand clean out sand, debris,
air, caulking material, etc. inside the pipe. Connect to the water
inlet, then check water ๎ƒow. Close the shuto๎ถป valve and clean the
water ๎ƒ€lter.
If a water heater is installed in a closed water supply system, such
as one having a back๎ƒow preventer in the cold water supply line,
means shall be provided to control thermal expansion. Contact
the water supplier or local plumbing inspector on how to control
this situation.
CAUTION: This water heater must only be used with the following water supply system conditions:
โ€ข With clean, potable water free of corrosive chemicals, sand, dirt, or other contaminates.
โ€ข With inlet water temperatures above 32ยฐF, but not to exceed 90ยฐF.
โ€ข Free of lime and scale deposits.
โ€ข DO NOT reverse the hot and cold water connections. The water heater will not operate.

โ€ข When the water is supplied from a water supply tank, the height of the tank and the diameter
of the pipes and their relation to water pressure, should be taken into consideration. Gravity
water pressure is not recommended.
IMPORTANT: Do not apply heat to the HOT or COLD water connections. Any heat applied to the
water supply ๎ƒ€ttings will permanently damage the internal components of the water heater.
NOTICE: If the water ๎ƒow resistance of a shower head is too high, the burner in the water heater will
fail to ignite. Keep the shower head clean from debris that could cause additional pressure drop.
Notice: If using mixing valves on the outlet, choose one which prevents cold water pressure from
overcoming hot water line pressure.
DO NOT use pipes with smaller diameters than the water supply connection of the water heater.
Be sure to connect the water inlet and the hot water outlet as shown on the water heater. If reversed,
the water heater will not function.
Installation of unions or ๎ƒexible copper connections are recommended on the HOT and COLD water
lines, so that the water heater may disconnect easily for servicing if necessary.
Plumbing should be carried out by a quali๎ƒ€ed plumber in accordance with local codes. Use approved
plumbing materials and tools only.
Install a Check Valve between the water heater and the water shuto๎ถป valve. (See illustration below).

In regards to the HOT WATER OUTLET:
โ€ข Connections between the water heater and point(s) of use
should be as short and direct as possible.
โ€ข DO NOT use lead or non-approved plastic pipe.
โ€ข To conserve energy and minimize heat loss, insulation of hot
water piping is recommended.
NOTICE: The ๎ƒow rate of hot water may vary when more
than two faucets (appliances, ๎ƒ€xtures, etc.) are being used
simultaneously.
NOTICE: The pipes MUST be completely drainable. If the hot
water faucets are located at a point higher than the water heater,
place a drain valve at the lowest point (see diagram to the left).

low gas pressures are present, contact your
gas supplier for correction
The water heater and its indivdual shuto๎ถป
valve must be disconnected from the gas
supply piping system during any pressure
testing of that system at test pressures in
excess of ยฝ psi (3.5 kPa). The water heater
must be isolated from the gas supply
piping system by closing its individual
manual shuto๎ถป valve during any pressure
testing of the gas supply piping system at
test pressures equal to or less than ยฝ psi
(3.5 kPa).
Gas Supply
WARNING: Do not attempt to convert this water heater for use with a di๎ท‡erent type of gas other
than the type shown on the rating plate. Such conversion could result in hazardous operating
conditions. Please have a professional connect the gas pipe.
DO NOT use excessive force (over 31.5 ft lbs.) in tightening the pipe, particularly if pipe compound is
used, as the unit may be damaged.
Compound used on the threaded joints of the gas piping must be of the type resistant to the action of
LP gas. Use compound sparingly and use on male threads only.

WARNING:
Never use an

test for gas leaks,

The water heater and its gas connections must be leak tested at normal
operating pressures before it is placed in operation.
โ€ข Turn on the gas shut-o๎ท‡ valve(s) to the water heater.
โ€ข Use a commercial leak detector or soapy water solution to test for
leaks at all connections and ๎ƒ€ttings. Bubbles indicate a gas leak that
must be corrected.
All connections should also be leak tested after the water heater is
placed in operation.
Pressure Testing the Gas Supply System
WARNING: Install a gas pressure regulator, in the gas supply line, which does not
exceed the maximum supply pressure. DO NOT use an industrial type gas regulator.
The water heater must be isolated from the gas piping system by closing the manual gas
shut-o๎ถป valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping at pressures equal to or
less than 1/2 psi (14โ€™w.c.) .
High Altitude
Ratings of gas appliances are based on sea level operation and need not be changed for installations
at elevations up to 2,000 feet. Unit not recommended for elevations in excess of 2,000 feet

A new pressure relief valve, complying with the Standard for relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shut-O๎ท‡
Devices for Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22, must be installed at the hot water outlet connection of
the water heater at the time of installation. Local codes shall govern the installation of relief valves.
For safe operation of the water heater, be sure that:
โ€ข The pressure rating of the relief valve must not exceed 150 psi, the maximum working pressure of
the water heater as marked on the rating plate.
โ€ข The BTUH rating of the relief valve must equal or exceed the BTUH input of the water heater as
marked on its rating plate.
โ€ข No valve of any type should be installed between the relief valve and the water heater.
โ€ข Discharge from the relief valve should be piped to a suitable drain to eliminate potential water
damage. Piping used should be of a type approved for the distribution of hot water.
โ€ข Hot and cold water lines should be insulated up to the water heater.
โ€ข The discharge line must be NO SMALLER than the outlet of the valve and must pitch downward to
allow complete drainage (by gravity) of the relief valve and discharge line.
โ€ข The end of the discharge line should not be threaded or concealed and should be protected from
freezing. No valve of any type, restriction or reducer coupling should be installed in discharge line.
NOTICE: The diagram below illustrates a pressure only relief valve. If local codes require a combination
temperature and pressure relief valve be installed, an extension piece may be needed.
Relief Valve
NOTICE: Local codes govern the installation of relief valves. If
local codes require that a temperature and pressure relief valve
should be installed the manufacturer recommends a type 40XL
Watts T&P relief valve or an equivalent model be used.
NOTICE: Manual operation of relief valves should be
performed at least once a year. Turn o๎ถป the electrical power
and gas shuto๎ถป valve. Lift and release lever on the relief valve
and check the manual operation of the relief valve. You should
take precaution to avoid contact with the hot water coming out
of the relief valve and to prevent water damage.
NOTICE: If the relief valve on the system discharges periodically,
this may be due to thermal expansion in a closed water supply
system. Contact the water supplier or local plumbing inspector
on how to correct this situation. Do not plug the relief valve.

Venting
The installation of venting must
comply with national codes, local
codes, and the vent manufacturerโ€™s
instructions. Owner must refer to
vent manufacturerโ€™s instructions
and speci๎ƒ€cations. Z-Flex

19 for additional links.
The water heater must be vented
to the outdoors as described in
these instructions. DO NOT connect
this water heater to an existing
Vent or Chimney, it must be vented
separately from all other appliances.
All vent components (adapters,
pipe, elbows, terminals, etc.) should
be UL 1738 Certi๎ƒ€ed Stainless Steel
Venting Material (e.g. AL29-4C).
The speci๎ƒ€ed vent termination must
be used. The termination should be
a 90ยฐ elbow type with screen.
(Refer to page 19).
Use a vent pipe with an
antidisconnection structure.
The use of a High Temperature
Silicone (500โ€™ F) may be required
to seal vent connections. To
prevent accidental gas exhaust
leakage, apply a 1/4โ€ wide bead
approximately 1/4โ€ from the end
and another bead against the joint
side of the stop bead.
Follow vent manufacturerโ€™s
installation instructions.
The unit can be vented either
horizontally or vertically.
Vent pipe runs must be adequately
supported along both horizontal
and vertical runs.
The maximum recommended
unsupported span should be no
more than ๎ƒ€ve (5) feet. Support
isolation hanging bands should
be used. DO NOT use wire. (See
diagram below).
DANGER: Failure
to install the vent
adapter and properly
vent the water heater
to the outdoors as
outlined in the
Venting section of
this manual will result
in unsafe operation
of the water heater
causing death, serious
injury, explosion, or
๎ƒ€re. To avoid the risk
of ๎ƒ€re, explosion,or
asphyxiation from
carbon monoxide,
NEVER operate the
water heater unless it
is properly vented
and has adequate
air supply for proper
operation as outlined
in the Venting section
of this manual.

Installing the EL22-I water heater
Venting Through Closed Spaces
If the vent piping passes through a closed space, wrap the vent pipe with in๎ƒammable insulation material
that is at least 3/4โ€ thick. DO NOT let the insulation material make contact with ๎ƒammable materials. A
minimum clearance of 6โ€ between the vent pipe and ceiling should be maintained. Follow local codes.
For maintenance and inspection purposes, the
following holes are required to be made:
โ€ข Two (2) inspection openings that allow access to venting. One
( 1) of these openings should be close to where the vent pipe
enters the ceiling. The other opening should be near the vent
termination.
โ€ข A ventilation hole with a 16 sq. in. opening should be made at
least every 10 feet.
NOTICE : Vent pipes must be completely insulated with
in๎ƒammable material when installed in alcoves, closets, and garages and must not touch any ๎ƒammable
material.

Venting Lengths
MAXIMUM VENT LENGTH

The system will not operate if there is excessive restriction
(pressure drop) in the venting system. A maximum of 32 feet of
vent pipe may be used provided there is only one 90ยฐ elbow in
the system. If additional elbows are required: two elbows can be
used with 27 feet, and three elbows can be used with 22 feet of
vent pipe.
A 90ยฐ elbow is equivalent to 5 feet of straight pipe. A 45ยฐ elbow
is equivalent to 2 feet 6 inches of straight pipe .
The termination elbow does not count as an elbow when
determining total vent lengths.
The vent must be installed with a slight downward slope of 1/ 4โ€
per foot of horizontal run toward the vent terminal (see diagram
below). This ensures that any condensate formed during
operation of the unit is evacuated from the water heater.
A 1/4โ€ per foot upward slope is acceptable when it is not
possible to vent with a downward slope, however, a UL approved
Category III Stainless Steel condensate trap MUST be installed
at the beginning of the horizontal run (See page 20 โ€œTypical
Horizontal Termination w/ 1/4โ€ per foot UPWARD Slopeโ€ or
page 14, โ€œStandard Vertical Vent Terminationโ€ for examples).

MINIMUM VENT LENGTH

Draining the Condensate
In certain conditions, installations in unconditioned space or having long horizontal or vertical
runs may accumulate condensate.
Condensate is known to be acidic; refer to local, state (provincial) or federal codes for proper
handling methods.
In order to prevent condensate from draining back into the water heater, we recommend a
condensate trap and drain to be installed in a horizontal vent section as close as practical to
the water heater vent connection.
Not following proper condensate procedures will void warranty.
