Setup
Unpack and power on your printer (see setup flyer). Then follow instructions and animations on the printer
display to complete the printer setup.
Readme
The Readme file contains HP support contact information, operating system requirements, and the most recent
updates to your product information.
Windows: Insert software CD. On software CD locate ReadMe.chm. Click ReadMe.chm to open and then
select ReadMe in your language.
Mac: Insert the software CD, and then double-click the Read Me folder located at the top-level of the software
CD.
Ink Usage
Ink from the cartridges is used in the printing process in several ways, including in the initialization process,
which prepares the printer and cartridges for printing, and in the printhead servicing process, which keeps
print nozzles clear and ink flowing smoothly. In addition, some residual ink is left in the cartridge after it is
used. For more information, go to: www.hp.com/go/inkusage.
Electronic Help
The electronic Help is automatically installed during printer software installation. Electronic Help includes
instructions on product features and troubleshooting, with additional links to online content. It also provides
product specifications, legal notices, environmental, regulatory, and support information.
Windows: After software installation, click > Start All Programs HP HP Photosmart 5520 series Help > > > .
Mac: During software installation, in the screen showing recommended software, select HP Recommended
Software, and then finish software installation.
• Mac OS X v10.6: Choose . In the Mac Help from Help Help Viewer, click and hold the button, and Home
then choose the Help for your device.
• Mac OS X v10.7: Choose , click Help Center from Help Help for all your apps, and then choose the Help
for your device.

Get to know your HP Photosmart
Control panel buttons:
1. Home: Returns you to the Home screen.
2. Help: On the Home screen, shows all Help
topics. On other screens, shows Help for that
screen.
3. Directional buttons: Allow you to navigate
through two home screens, photos, print
previews, apps, and horizontal menu options.
4. : Returns you to the previous screen.Back
5. Cancel: Stops the current operation.
6. ePrint icon and button: Displays the ePrint
printer’s email address, ePrint status, and ePrint
feature. You can change ePrint settings, or print
an Info page.
7. Wireless icon and : Displays Wireless button
wireless status, IP address, network name,
hardware address (MAC), and Wireless Direct
status. You can change the wireless settings
or print a wireless test report to help diagnose
network connection issues.
8. icon: Shows estimated ink levels by cartridge.Ink
9. Settings icon: You can change the Sleep mode,
Auto Power-off feature, or other settings from
the Preferences menu and use tools to perform
maintenance functions.
10. Photo: Print photos directly from a memory
card in various sizes and papers. Insert your
memory card into the memory card slot. Touch
View&Print to browse and print photos. Use
the menu to rotate, crop, or fix a photo.Edit
11. Apps: Provides a quick and easy way to access
and print information from the web, such as
maps, coloring pages, puzzles, and more.
12. Copy: Make 1-sided or 2-sided color or black
copies. Touch the button to change Settings
paper settings (size, type, resize, margins) and
image quality (lighten/darken, enhancements).
13. Scan: Select a destination by touching , Email
Memory Card Computer, or . You can also start a
scan from the computer sofware, which provides
more advanced features.
14. Quick Forms: You can print calendars, check lists,
games, notebook paper, graph paper, and music
paper.

16. Wireless status light:
• Solid blue light indicates that wireless connection has been established and you can print.
• Slow blinking light indicates that wireless is on, but the printer is not connected to a network. Make sure
your printer is within the range of the wireless signal.
• Fast blinking light indicates wireless error. Refer to the message on the printer display.

If you are unable to print...
Check for error messages and resolve them. If you are still unable to print, try the following in order:
Make sure that your HP Photosmart is set as the
default printer and is not offline.
To do this:
1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start.
2. Then click:
• Devices and Printers (Windows 7®)
• Printers (Windows Vista®)
• Control Panel,and then click Printers and
Faxes (Windows XP®)
Look for your printer to see if it has a check mark in
a circle next to it. If not, right-click the printer icon
and select Set as default printer from the menu.
To check that your printer is not offline, right-click the
printer icon and ensure that and Use Printer Offline
Pause Printing not are selected.
If the HP printer software installation failed:
1. Remove the CD from your computer’s CD
drive, and then disconnect the printer from the
computer.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Temporarily disable any software firewall and
close any anti-virus software.
4. Insert the printer software CD into your
computer’s CD drive, then follow the onscreen
instructions to install the printer software. Do not
connect the USB cable until you are told to do
so.
5. After the installation finishes, restart the computer
and any security software you disabled or
closed.
Restart and reset:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Reset the printer:
a. Turn off the printer and unplug the power
cord.
b. Wait a minute, then plug the power cord
back in and turn on the printer.
Check your print queue:
1. In System Preferences, click:
• Print & Fax (Mac OS X v10.6)
• Print & Scan (Mac OS X v10.7)
2. Click the Open Print Queue button.
3. Click a print job to select it.
4. Use the following buttons to manage the print
job:
• Delete: Cancel the selected print job.
• Resume: Continue a paused print job.
• If you made any changes, try to print again.
If you are still unable to print, uninstall and reinstall
the HP printer software.
To uninstall the software:
1. Disconnect the printer from your computer.
2. Open the Applications: Hewlett-Packard folder.
3. Double-click . Follow the onscreen HP Uninstaller
instructions.
To install the software:
1. Insert the CD into your computer’s CD drive.
2. On the desktop, open the CD, then double-click
HP Installer.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions.
Note: Only use this printer with the power cord supplied by HP.
