Introduction
TheDigitalMediasystem is acompletetransportation,switching,anddistribution system
for digital,analog,andstreamingvideo.Itis theonlyfully-engineered, field-proven
end-to-enddigitalsolutionthatsupports emergingtechnologies.
Crestron Electronics,Inc.starteddesigningproducts with HDMI®(High-Definition
MultimediaInterface)technologyover ten years ago andhas shipped morethan 100,000
DigitalMediasystems. TheDM® (DigitalMedia)system is theonlysolution for thedigital
age,distributing analoganduncompressedHD digitalsignals,andmanagingembedded
data,such as HDCP (High-bandwidthDigitalContent Protection),EDID (ExtendedDisplay
IdentificationData),andCEC(ConsumerElectronics Control).
DMmatrixswitchers areflexible, modular systems thatcan acceptvirtuallyevery signal
typeandtransmit them long-distanceas digitalDMsignals.Thebuilt-in exclusive
QuickSwitch HD™ technologymaintains aconstanthandshakefor continuous,glitch-free
HD switching. At theendpoints,DMreceivers output HDMI andcontrolto thedisplay.
Thepurposeof this guideis to provide:
lDMsolutions for HD distributionissues
lDetailedinformationto assist inthedesignof an HD mediadistributionsystem

System Commissioning
Commissioning aDMsystem consists of:
lProper ExtendedDisplayIdentification Data(EDID)configuration inDMTool
software
lLink Quality(LQ)tests
lDMTest Report
EDID Design
EDID designis justas crucialassystem hardwaredesign.EDID istheinformationthat
tells asource whatresolutionto outputwhenitis pluggedin.EDID dataflows inreverse
from theAVinformation, so thedisplaytells thesourcewhatitwants—not theother way
around.
Insomecases, theuser canadjusttheoutputresolution of thesource, but notwithout a
validEDID tablefrom thedisplay.APCallowstheuser tochoosearesolution from thelist
providedin thedisplaysettings.Thatlistisgeneratedbythedisplayandis sentto thePC.
DigitalMediadistributes EDIDtoallthesourcesthatareattached.This EDID tableshould
bemanuallyset bythesystem commissioner andconsideredapartof a completesystem
design.Whileautomaticmodeguarantees thatsomethingappears onthescreen,itcannot
guaranteethecustomeris seeingwhattheywant.
DMToolsoftware(availableinCrestron Toolbox)allows theuser to manuallyconfigure the
EDID table, whilecomplyingwith allthe rulesof EDID. Thereareonlysomanyentries that
canexistin anEDID table,whichmeanseveryresolution cannotbelisted.Signal type(VGA,
DVI,HDMI)impacts theEDID tablesize.HDMI signals allow for moreEDID entries than
DVI andVGA(an important considerationwhen choosingsources).
StartEDID tabledesignbyansweringtwo questions:
1. Howdoes thecustomer expectthesystem to work?
lFor residential systems,theanswer maybeassimpleas "I want1080pvideo
everywhere."
lIncommercialsystems,thecustomer maywantto choosefrom anumber of
sources, includingusingalaptopto displayon aprojector.
2. Whatis thenativeresolution of eachdisplayinthesystem? If alldisplaysdonot
sharethesamenativeresolution, is thereacommonresolution across all?

Prior to 2012,every DMcardandendpoint in aninstallation requiredits ownIP address on
thecorporatenetwork.In 2012,Crestron introducedPNMto DMswitchers.PNMgreatly
reduces thenumber of IP addresses requiredfor DMinstallations.Crestron recommends
usingPNMto manageEthernet settings for DMcards andendpoints connectedto aDM

OTE:OTE:PNMis not applicableto standaloneinstallations involvingdirectly connectedDM
endpoints withno associatedDMswitchers.In theseinstallations, eachendpointdevice
needs itsownIPaddress,either configuredmanually orviaDHCP.
PNMcreates acompletelyprivateIP network for allDMcards andendpoints thatare
connectedto theDMswitcher, effectively isolatingthem from thebuilding network.PNM
significantly streamlines homeandorganizationalinfrastructures, conserves IPaddresses,
reduces costs,andsimplifies systemmanagement andtroubleshooting.
Theonlydevicethatappears on thebuildingnetwork is theDMswitcher.Theswitcher
needs just oneIP address, which can either besetstaticallyor assignedviathebuilding's

Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)
SinceDMdevices embedEthernetinevery link,avalidAVconfigurationcan createnetwork
loops, such as routingtwoAVsignals from oneswitcher to another switcher.Toeliminate
anynetworkloopingproblems, DMproducts implementIEEE802.1wRSTP (Rapid
SpanningTreeProtocol).WithPNMenabled, theDMswitcher manages theDMEthernet
links to prevent network loops.
DMproducts transmitBridgeProtocolDataUnits (BPDU)per theRSTP specification.
With PNMenabled, BPDUs areisolated totheprivatenetwork andarenot visibleto the
corporatenetwork. RSTPis not enabledon user-accessibleLAN connectors. To prevent
networkloops,endpoints shouldnot beconnectedto thecorporateLAN inthis
configuration.
By default, every DMswitcher ships withPNMandRSTP enabled. If PNMis disabled,RSTP
remains enabled.If required,disableRSTP andmanageEthernetports manually.
N
N
N
NNOTE:
OTE:
OTE:
OTE:OTE:PNMis not configurableon switchers equippedwith theDMC-CPU3,whereitis
always enabled.
MultipleSpanningTreeProtocol(MSTP), which is an advancedversionof RSTP,supports
multiplespanningtrees on multiple VLANs.DMimplements RSTP butnot MSTP.If running
MSTP on the network, ensurethatthenetwork port to which DMis connected only belongs
tooneVLAN. This is onlya problem if PNMis disabled.
ManagedEthernetswitches canbeconfiguredto haveedgeports.Ethernetswitches
cannotbepluggedintoedgeports.
lIf PNMis enabled,aDMswitcher is compatiblewith edge ports.
lIf PNMis disabled, themanagedEthernetswitches may consider theDMsystem to

Thecomplexity of HDMI becomes obvious when HDMI cables arecomparedto analog
audioandvideo cables.Analogcables typically consistof oneto threewirepairs, depending
on theformat,andtheysimplycarryanaudio or video signal(notboth).In contrast,the
HDMIcableconsists of 19wires that carryhigh-speed video, audio, andother digital
information.Thedigitalaudio andvideo datais encodedintothreecolor channels anda
clockchannel.Audio is embeddedinsidethevideo data and is insertedandextractedat
each end.Additionalinformation carriedbyHDMIincludes:
lTheDataDisplaychannel (DDC),a2-way communications interfacebetweenthe
sourceandthedownstream repeater or display device. This channelwas originally
providedto communicatedevicecapability information, whichis encoded in EDID.
HDMIdevices useEDID to indicatewhat audio and video formats theysupport. The
DDC interfaceis also usedto setupandmaintain HDCP encryption.
lThedownstream device,or sink, indicates its presenceto thesourcewith thehot
plug detect (HPD)signal, which allows each deviceto knowwhen acablehas been
connectedandto start authentication.
lConsumer Electronics Control(CEC),afunctionthatprovides controlto multiple
devices over HDMIusingoneremotecontroldevice.Asecondarydevicereceives
commands from aprimary device. AlthoughCECwiringis requiredfor every HDMI
port, this does notmeanevery HDMI port has thefunctionenabled.
Depending onthedeviceandmanufacturer,DDC,HPD, and CECsignals interact
differently.This inconsistency can negativelyaffectdeviceperformance.Thereare
additionalcontrolsignals associatedwith HDMI,buttheyarebeyondthescopeof this
guide.

Topology
Every HDMI installation consists of atleast onecontent source, likeacableboxor Blu-ray
player, andaTVor aprojector. Most custom installations also involveatleast onerepeater,
adevicethataccepts andretransmits HDMI content.Repeaters includesimpledevices
suchas switchesanddistributionamplifiers as wellasmorefeature-richdevices such as
audioandvideoprocessors.
EDID
HDMI displaydevices andsurroundsoundreceivers useEDID tocommunicatetheiraudio
andvideocapabilities.EmbeddedintheHDMI signal,EDID datais generatedbyadisplayor
audioprocessor toinform theupstream sourceaboutitsformatandresolution
capabilities.Inresponseto thisdata,thesourceordinarily configuresitself to sendthebest
video resolution andaudioformatthatbothdevices cansupport.For example,Blu-ray
players includevideo scalers tobest match thedisc's nativeformatto thecapabilities of
thetelevisionor projector.
Inthesimplestinstallations,with onetelevisionandanaudioprocessor,theEDID protocol
works reasonably well.Multiroominstallations canquicklybecomeproblematic when
severaltelevisionsareconnectedtoseveralsources through oneor moreHDMIswitches.
Neither theHDMI nor theEDID specifications offer assistancetotheuser.

Devices that retransmitHDCPcontent must inform thesourceof allthedownstream
connections inthesystem.Every HDCPdevicehas auniqueID, knowas aKey Selection
Vector (KSV),thatmust bepassedtothesource.Thesourcemust then verify eachdevice
beforeittransmits content.Itis this authenticationprocess thatcauses theswitch time
delayinHDMIdevices.
DigitalMediasolves theblankscreen issueby utilizingatechnologycalledQuickSwitchHD.
QuickSwitch HD manages thekeys for every HDCP-compliant devicein thesystem,
maintainingcontinuous authentication for each deviceto ensurefast, reliableroutingof
anysourceto any number of displaydevices. In astandardHDMI switcher, each displayis
authenticated dynamically whenvideois routed.WithDigitalMedia, theauthentication
process takes placeas displaysareadded.Duringinitialization, sources areauthenticated
witheachdisplaythrough theDMsystem beforeanyaudio or video is routed.
Crestron's High-DefinitionDigitalVideo Processor (DVPHD)is thefirst multiwindow
processor of its kindthatenables HDCPtoworkwith acompleterangeof digitalvideo
players,cableandsatellitereceivers,multimediacomputers,displays, and projectors.While
other manufacturers ignoreHDCP completely, theDVPHD actuallyperforms advanced
HDCP signal management, allowinguptoeight HDCP-encryptedsources to becombined
on onehigh-definition screen.
Consumer Electronics Control
EachHDMI cablecontains acommunication link thatenables devices connected viaHDMI
totalk toeachother.This protocolis calledConsumer Electronics Control(CEC).When a
controlsystem is inplace, theother devices shouldnot issuecommands.CECis supposed
tocontainindustry-standardcommands for interoperability,butinconsistent support
from CE manufacturers has caused awidevariation in thefunctions that canbetriggered
from each device.Someexamples of this functionalitythatCrestron has discoveredare:
lMultipleDVD players from thesamemanufacturer inthesamesystem
communicatewitheachother so that onlyonecanplayatatime.Every timeone
player is issuedtheplaycommand, theplayer sends apausecommandto theother
players viaCEC.
lWhen aBlu-rayplayer is turnedoff, itsends apower off command, turningoff all
displays connectedto thesystem.
Thesefunctionalcommands areamajor issuebecausetheyaresentbehindthescenes.
DigitalMediabreaks thecommunication path between theHDMI devices thatare
connectedto theswitch. Therefore, thesecommands cannot besentwithout approval.

Convergence
HDMI enables computers todeliverpremium mediacontent,includinghigh-definition
movies andmultichannelaudioformats.Itis theonlyinterfacethatenables direct
connections to both HDTVs anddigital computer monitors whileupholdingtheDVI and
HDMI standards.
HDMI is fullycompatiblewithallDVI-enabledcomputers becauseHDMI was developed
usingthesametechnologyas DigitalVisualInterface(DVI),which has been themost
common digitalconnection for computers.BecauseHDMI offers bothaudio andvideo over
onecableand DVI only carries video,DVI andHDMI connectivityrequires aseparateaudio
cable.
DisplayPort
DisplayPort is aVESA(Video Electronics Standards Association)standardfor digitalvideo
connection andis similar to HDMIin functionality.TheDisplayPort standardwas driven by
thePCindustry to achievealow-cost process for transferringvideo from acomputer to a
laptopscreenandexternaldigitalvideooutput.Both protocols support 1080pandhigher
resolutions,HDCPcontentprotection,andmultichannelaudio.HDMI additionallysupports
someitems not supportedbyDisplayPort,such as CEC.
Summary
Widesupport from content providers andtheconsumer electronics marketplacemakes
HDMIthecurrent standard of HDvideo transmission.Therearemanyproblems with
HDMIandtheyarenot just limited tocablelengthissues.ProcessingEDID andmanaging
HDCP requires complex microcontrollers, especially when severalrooms areinvolved.
Switching systems must beeasilycustomizable tointelligentlyhandleEDID andHDCP.
DigitalMediamanages thesevarious communication mechanisms andprovides extensive
troubleshootinginformation sotheinstaller can solveissues such as cablefailure, device
incompatibilities,andcontent protection complications.
