AF frame size adjusting knob
This is used to determine the size of the AF frame, which is to be displayed on
the screen during AF control, for the subject to be brought into focus. AF control
(focusing) is performed for the subject inside the frame. The AF frame size can
be changed in 3 steps.
AF frame position joystick
< AF frame movement operation >
The joystick is operated to move the AF frame, which is to be displayed on the
screen during AF control, for the subject to be brought into focus. To operate it, tilt
it in the direction in which the AF frame is to be moved.
< AF frame center return operation >
Press the head of the joystick for AF frame position to return the AF frame to the
screen center. The AF frame returns to the center while retaining the size it had
before moving to the center.
MOUNTING AND CONNECTING
1. Loosen the large and small lock knobs of the clamper supplied with the focus
demand, and then mount the clamper to the pan handle of the tripod.
2. After mounting the clamper to the pan handle, tighten the large and small lock
knobs to secure the clamper.
3. Mate the rose joint of the focus demand with the rose joint of the clamper. Then
tighten the mounting knob of the clamper to rmly secure the focus demand.
4. Plug the demand cable into the connector of "TO SERVO CONTROL" on the
lens, and the other side into the connector of the focus demand.
OPERATION AND FUNCTION
[ Focusing operation ]
Turning the operation knob on the focus demand brings the object into focus.
[ Changing the focus direction ]
The direction of far or near can be switched by shifting the reverse switch on the
focus demand.
FDJ-S31 : The factory default setting is to focus on a farther object when turned
clockwise as viewed from the operation knob side.
FDJ-S41 : The factory default setting is to focus on a farther object when turned
counterclockwise as viewed from the operation knob side.
[ Adjusting the operation knob torque ]
Turning the torque adjusting knob on the focus demand can change the torque
for the operation knob’s rotation.
[Selecting the focus characteristics curve]
The focus characteristics curve selector switch on the focus demand can be
used to select one of the focus characteristics from the following three modes.
Standard mode
Standard characteristics where the focus lens
group is moved almost linearly, relative to the
operation knob rotation angle.
Far mode
Focusing resolution for farther objects is
intentionally increased. This enables ne and
easy adjustment work for farther objects near
to innity.
Near mode
Focusing resolution for closer objects is
intentionally increased. This enables ne and
easy adjustment work for closer objects near
to M.O.D.
[ Auto focusing operation ]
AF MODE selection switch
PART TIME : The AF mode is established while the AF ACTIVE/HOLD
switch is held down.
FULL TIME : The AF mode is established at all times.
OFF : This position is selected when the AF function is not going to
be used.
AF ACTIVE/HOLD switch
The switch functions as follows depending on which AF mode is selected.
AF MODE Status AF ACTIVE/HOLD Switch Function
PART TIME AF control takes e󰀨ect while the switch is held down.
FULL TIME The focus position before the switch is pressed is held for
as long as the switch is held down.
VF display selection switch
This switch is used to select the AF frame and focus status display on the
viewnder (hereinafter VF).
ALL : The AF frame and focus status are displayed.
STATUS : Only the focus status is displayed.
OFF : Neither the AF frame nor the focus status is displayed.
AF response adjusting knob
This is used to adjust the trackability (response speed) for AF control.
Turn the knob clockwise : The response speed falls.
Turn the knob counterclockwise : The response speed rises.

Before using the product, make sure to read the "GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION"
and be sure to use the product correctly.
Thank you for purchasing a focus demand FDJ-S31(right-hand) / FDJ-S41(left-hand).
This focus demand FDJ-S31 / FDJ-S41 is an accessory used to perform focus servo
operations of a box type lens. The focus can be operated remotely by using this
demand.
NOTE
All the following AF functions can be utilized to the full only when the lens,
the demand and the camera all support the AF functions. Bear in mind
that in a status where the AF frame is not (or cannot be) displayed on the
VF, only the AF and AF frame size can be changed but the frame cannot
be moved.
NOTE
The AF frame and focus status displays are functions and specications
pertaining to the camera (including of VF). Check the camera which will be
used.

HANDLING THE PRODUCT
WARNING
1. Do not get this product wet or allow liquid inside. If water gets inside, stop using the product
immediately. Continuing to use the product under this condition may cause a re or electric shocks.
2. Be sure to hold the connector when disconnecting the cable. Pulling on the cable may sever or
damage it and pose a risk of a re or electric shocks from a short circuit.
CAUTION
1. Be careful not to drop the product when carrying it. Dropping the product may cause injury.
2. Ensure that all mountings are securely tightened. If a mounting becomes loose, parts may fall o󰀨
and cause injury.
3. Inspect mountings regularly (about every six months to one year) to ensure they are securely
tightened. If a mounting becomes loose, parts may fall o󰀨 and cause injury.
NOTE
1. Striking or dropping the lens may cause the malfunction of the product.
2. This product is not waterproof. Take measures to avoid direct contact with rain, snow, or moisture.
Otherwise it may cause the malfuction of the product.
3. In dusty environments, cover the product when attaching or removing the product. If dust enters
inside, it may cause the malfunction of the product.
4. Before use in particular environments, such as places where chemical products are used, contact
your Canon sales representative or dealer. Otherwise it may cause the malfuction of the product.
DEALING WITH ABNORMALITIES
WARNING
If any of the following situations occurs, immediately disconnect the power plug from the power
outlet and contact your Canon sales representative or dealer.
Smoke, fumes, or unusual noises
Entry of foreign objects (such as liquid or metal objects) inside the product
MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION
WARNING
Be sure to disconnect the cable and remove the lens from the camera before cleaning outside
of the lens. Do not use benzene, thinner, or other ammable substances to clean the product.
Otherwise it may cause a re or electric shocks.
NOTE
Routine inspection about once a year is recommended, depending on the conditions and
environment of use. Request overhaul, if needed.
STORAGE
NOTE
Immediately wipe off any moisture on the lens from misty or foggy environments, using a dry
cloth. Seal the lens in a plastic bag with a desiccant (preferably new) to prevent moisture inside.
Otherwise it may cause the mold or the malfunction of the product.
